Chuck D, born Carlton Douglas Ridenhour on August 1, 1960, in New York, is an American rapper best known as the leader and frontman of Public Enemy, the group he co-founded in 1985 with Flavor Flav. He studied graphic design at Adelphi University on Long Island and worked at the campus radio station WBAU, where a recording of 'Public Enemy No. 1' reached Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin and led to the group's signing. His baritone delivery and politically charged writing helped create politically and socially conscious hip-hop in the mid-1980s, on albums including It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988) and Fear of a Black Planet (1990). The Source ranked him No. 12 on its list of the Top 50 Hip-Hop Lyricists of All Time. He released the solo album Autobiography of Mistachuck in 1996, later performed with the supergroup Prophets of Rage, and founded the Rapstation platform. As a member of Public Enemy he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, alongside six career Grammy nominations. Public Enemy itself holds a record in this graph (CTL-E-5699); this record is the frontman endpoint its member wiring was missing.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Wave 7, Batch C) — not merged. Gate A: no Chuck D record in the live graph (3,443 entities), 2026-10-16 — ABSENT (Public Enemy CTL-E-5699 and Professor Griff CTL-E-5675 are homed; he was not). Vital status: LIVING — verified by dated August 1, 2025 birthday coverage marking his 65th birthday and describing continuing work; no death reporting in any source reviewed. Edge staged: Chuck D related_to → Public Enemy (CTL-E-5699), frontman/co-founder role in evidence. CONFLICT SHOWN: sources differ on birthplace — the primary source's infobox gives Hempstead, New York; a biographical account gives Roosevelt, Long Island; The Source's 2025 piece gives Queens, New York. The description therefore states only 'New York' and records the disagreement here rather than blending it. Photo: HELD (see media). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person/group records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: No Commons/LOC file page stating a license was verified for this subject in this pass; slot held rather than f | chart = FILLED | video = HELD (No Shorts Link Map row bills Chuck D. Short #176 bills Professor Griff and Public Enemy's Minister of Informat) | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared audio for this subject exists at staging; the recorded catalog is label copyrig)
