Public Enemy is the hip-hop group formed in 1985 on Long Island, New York, by Chuck D (Carlton Ridenhour) and Flavor Flav (William Drayton), who met as students at Adelphi University, and built with the Bomb Squad production team, DJ Terminator X and 'Minister of Information' Professor Griff. Signed to Def Jam Recordings, the group released Yo! Bum Rush the Show (1987) and then It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988), the first hip-hop album to top the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll. 'Fight the Power,' written for Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing (1989), and Fear of a Black Planet (1990) fixed the group's method: dense, sample-built production under explicit argument about American racism and media. The group's first four albums were each certified gold or platinum by the RIAA. Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 — the fourth hip-hop act so honored — and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
