Flavor Flav, born William Jonathan Drayton Jr. on March 16, 1959, in Roosevelt, New York, is an American rapper and hype man, and a founding member, alongside Chuck D, of Public Enemy. Raised in Freeport, Long Island, he taught himself piano, drums and guitar as a child, attended culinary school, and met Carlton Ridenhour at Adelphi University, where the two first collaborated on college radio. Within Public Enemy he served as the comic counterweight to Chuck D's somber delivery — the jester to the frontman's baritone — popularizing the role of the hype man, with signature oversized clock necklaces and the call 'Yeah, boyeee!'; he took the lead on the group single '911 Is a Joke' (1990). Public Enemy earned six Grammy Award nominations, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group. Biographical accounts document periods of addiction and legal trouble that interrupted his career in the 1990s. He returned to wide public attention in the 2000s as the star of the VH1 reality series The Surreal Life, Strange Love and Flavor of Love, and released a self-titled solo album in 2006. He remains an active performer with Public Enemy.
