The Fugees were an American hip-hop group whose members — rapper, singer and producer Wyclef Jean, rapper and singer Lauryn Hill, and rapper Pras Michel — took the group's name from the word refugee; Jean and Michel are Haitian American, and Hill is American. Formed in New Jersey after Jean, Michel and Hill began working together around 1990, the trio released Blunted on Reality in 1994 to little mainstream attention. Their second album, The Score (1996), became one of the biggest hits of its year and one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time, built on reinterpretations including 'Killing Me Softly' and 'No Woman, No Cry' alongside the original singles 'Fu-Gee-La' and 'Ready or Not.' At the 1997 Grammy Awards the group won Best Rap Album for The Score and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for 'Killing Me Softly,' and The Score was nominated for Album of the Year, the first such nomination for a hip-hop group. The members separated for solo projects in 1997: Hill recorded The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Jean launched The Carnival, and Michel scored a hit with 'Ghetto Supastar.' Lauryn Hill already holds a record in this graph (CTL-E-5565).

Notes
STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Wave 7, Batch C) — not merged. Gate A: no Fugees record in the live graph (3,443 entities), 2026-10-16 — ABSENT, while Lauryn Hill (CTL-E-5565) is homed. Vital status: GROUP — original run ended 1997 (both primary and HistoryMakers sources); later reunion activity and tours are documented in the wider record but no new group album followed, so the era is carried as 1990–1997 and reunion activity is noted here rather than blended into the era. STATISTIC NOTE: platinum counts differ by date — six-times platinum in 2021 retrospective writing, seven-times platinum RIAA as of February 2021 in the album record; the dated figure is carried in the packet MD, not blended into the description. Typing: Person/group per PPL-001 precedent. Edges staged: Lauryn Hill (CTL-E-5565), Wyclef Jean (roster name) and Pras (roster name) each related_to → Fugees, membership in evidence. Photo: HELD (see media). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person/group records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: No Commons/LOC file page stating a license was verified for this subject in this pass; slot held rather than f | chart = FILLED | video = HELD (No Shorts Link Map row bills the Fugees. Rows billing Lauryn Hill as a solo subject (#68, #160) are hers, not ) | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared audio for this subject exists at staging; the recorded catalog is label copyrig)
