Wyclef Jean, born Nelust Wyclef Jean on October 17, 1969, in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, is a Haitian rapper, singer, songwriter and producer. He emigrated with his family at age nine to Brooklyn, New York, and settled in East Orange and Newark, New Jersey. He gained fame as a member of the Fugees, whose second album, The Score (1996), became one of the best-selling albums of all time, and launched a solo career with Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival (1997), which carried the top-ten hit 'Gone Till November' and the Grammy-nominated 'Guantanamera.' His second album, The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book (2000), included the hit '911' with Mary J. Blige, and he appeared on Shakira's 'Hips Don't Lie' (2006), a number-one single in eighteen countries. As a producer and writer he worked on Destiny's Child's 'No, No, No,' Whitney Houston's 'My Love Is Your Love' and Santana's 'Maria Maria.' His honors include three Grammy Awards, the BET Humanitarian Award and the NAACP Vanguard Award. Haiti appointed him Ambassador-at-Large in 2007; his 2010 candidacy for Haiti's presidency was ruled ineligible on residency grounds, and his Yéle Haiti charity later closed amid financial scrutiny.
