Adopted as a child and raised in Kernersville by her adoptive family, she is of Mauritian and Italian descent and has spoken about growing up in a predominantly white household and community. She first reached a national audience inside Black television canon, playing the metahuman Wendy Hernandez across two seasons of the CW's Black Lightning, before breaking out as Kiara "Kie" Carrera, the conscience of the Pogues, in Netflix's Outer Banks (2020– ). In October 2025 she headlined the Prime Video romantic comedy Maintenance Required, speaking in interviews about choosing projects that let her tell the stories inside her own intersection — Black, queer, and a woman.
