Combined Graph record U-07129 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-5879.

Marlin Oliver Briscoe (September 10, 1945 – June 27, 2022), nicknamed “the Magician,” was an American professional football player from Omaha, Nebraska, who starred at quarterback at Omaha University before the Denver Broncos drafted him in the fourteenth round in 1968 — as a cornerback. Briscoe insisted on a tryout at quarterback, nearly rallied Denver to victory as a reserve on September 29, 1968, and on October 6, 1968 earned a start, becoming the first Black starting quarterback in the American Football League and, in the Associated Press's framing, the first Black starting quarterback in modern professional football. As a rookie he threw fourteen touchdown passes, a Broncos record that stood until 2024, and finished runner-up for AFL Rookie of the Year. Denied a chance to compete at quarterback in 1969, he asked for his release, converted to wide receiver with the Buffalo Bills, and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1970. He then won two Super Bowls as a receiver with the Miami Dolphins, including the undefeated 1972 team's Super Bowl VII victory, across a nine-year professional career. Briscoe died of pneumonia in Norwalk, California, on June 27, 2022, at age seventy-six.
