Victor Wembanyama, born 4 January 2004 in Le Chesnay, France, is a French professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs. The son of Felix Wembanyama, a track and field athlete of Congolese descent, and Elodie de Fautereau, a former basketball player and coach, he developed in France with Nanterre 92, ASVEL and Metropolitans 92, winning the French league's Most Valuable Player award in 2023. San Antonio selected him first overall in the 2023 NBA draft. He was the unanimous NBA Rookie of the Year in 2024, the first rookie named to the All-Defensive First Team, and he led France to a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After a blood-clot diagnosis shortened his second season, he returned in 2025-26 to average career highs of 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds, win Defensive Player of the Year as its youngest and first unanimous recipient, and carry San Antonio to the 2026 NBA Finals, where the Spurs fell to New York in five games. He signed a multi-year extension with San Antonio in July 2026.
