James G. Beck

Knoxville educator and civic leader: Knoxville College's first athletic director, principal of Mitchell Chapel School, head of English at Austin High, Tennessee's first Black postal clerk, and organizer of Knoxville's NAACP chapter (1919). With his wife Ethel B. Beck he built real-estate wealth whose estate helped found the Beck Cultural Exchange Center (1975), named in their honor.
