A'Lelia Bundles is the author and journalist who wrote the definitive biography of her great-great-grandmother, Madam C. J. Walker. Her On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker (Scribner, 2001), the product of more than twenty years of research, was the first full-scale biography of the beauty-industry pioneer, and it was adapted as the 2020 Netflix limited series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker, starring Octavia Spencer. Bundles came to the biography from a career as a veteran television news journalist and producer, including work at ABC News, per her publisher biographies. Her second Walker-family biography, Joy Goddess: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance (Scribner, June 10, 2025), turns to Walker's daughter — the author's namesake — and the Harlem Renaissance world she bankrolled and embodied. Bundles maintains the Walker research archive and site at aleliabundles.com.
