Combined Graph record U-07179 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-5936.

Willie Thrower (Willie Lee Thrower Sr., born March 22, 1930, New Kensington, Pennsylvania; died February 20, 2002) was the first Black quarterback to play in the modern National Football League. At Michigan State he was the first Black quarterback in the Big Ten and a member of the Spartans' 1952 national championship team. Signed by the Chicago Bears, Thrower made his NFL debut on October 18, 1953, against the San Francisco 49ers at Wrigley Field, relieving George Blanda and completing three of eight passes for 27 yards with one interception — the first appearance by a Black quarterback in the modern NFL, as the Bears' own history records it. The Bears released him after the 1953 season, and the league's color line at quarterback held for years more. Warren Moon thanked Thrower by name in his 2006 Pro Football Hall of Fame speech; a statue of Thrower was unveiled at his Valley High School in 2006.
