Ewart Abner (Ewart G. Abner Jr., 1923–1997) was the executive who ran two of the most important Black-owned record companies in American history. Trained as an accountant, he worked at Chance Records before joining Chicago's Vee-Jay Records — founded in Gary, Indiana, in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken — where he rose from manager to vice president to president of what became the largest Black-owned label of its era. Vee-Jay's subsidiary labels (Falcon, Conrad, Tollie, and Abner) took their names in part from their principals' middle names. The label's collapse in the mid-1960s followed the Beatles licensing episode, Capitol Records lawsuits, and, in NPR-reported accounts, Abner's gambling losses and payroll schemes. Abner later became president of Motown Records in 1973 and managed the Supremes, the Temptations, the Jackson 5, and Stevie Wonder; AllMusic calls him a president of two pioneering Black-owned labels, Vee-Jay and Motown.
