Gerri Oliver — Geraldine “Mama Gerri” Oliver — was the proprietor who made Gerri's Palm Tavern at 446 East 47th Street the premier gathering place of Bronzeville for nearly half a century. A Mississippi native who had worked as a manicurist, she bought the tavern in 1956 from James “Genial Jim” Knight, who had opened it in 1933 and held court as the first “Mayor of Bronzeville.” Under Oliver the Palm Tavern hosted Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Lena Horne, Muddy Waters, and Quincy Jones, and Harold Washington celebrated his 1983 mayoral victory there. The city boarded the building up in an eminent-domain taking in August 2001, and it was later demolished; the tavern itself is homed in the graph at CTL-E-0145. Oliver died on December 7, 2020, at the age of 101, in California. She is a distinct person from Gerri Major, the journalist — the shared first name is a documented collision trap in the sources, and this record is built on the Palm Tavern proprietor only.
