Walter Mosley (born January 12, 1952, Los Angeles) is the novelist who brought the Black private-eye tradition into the literary mainstream with Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, the Watts factory worker turned reluctant detective. His debut, Devil in a Blue Dress (1990), set in 1948 Los Angeles, was named among the Mystery Writers of America's best hundred mystery novels and was filmed in 1995 with Denzel Washington as Rawlins. The Rawlins series has run for more than three decades alongside Mosley's Leonid McGill and Fearless Jones books, science fiction, plays, and essays. His publisher and the press describe him as the most important African American crime writer since Chester Himes, and he was a favorite author of President Bill Clinton. Mosley's work insists that the detective novel — America's most democratic form — belongs to Black Los Angeles as fully as to Chandler's.
