Barry Jenkins (Barry Lamar Jenkins, born November 19, 1979, Miami) is the filmmaker whose Moonlight (2016) won the Academy Award for Best Picture and reset what American independent cinema could be. Raised in Miami's Liberty City and trained at Florida State University's film school (BFA 2003), he made his debut feature, Medicine for Melancholy (2008), for roughly $15,000. Moonlight, made for about $1.5 million, won Best Picture; Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney won Best Adapted Screenplay, and Jenkins was the fourth Black person nominated for Best Director and the second Black director of a Best Picture winner. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) followed, winning Regina King the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, and his Amazon limited series The Underground Railroad (2021) drew an Emmy directing nomination and a Peabody Award. Early in his career Jenkins worked as a director's assistant on Harpo's television adaptation of Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005) — a formative credit shared, across this very packet, with Zora Neale Hurston (CTL-E-5957).
