“Move On Up” is Curtis Mayfield's signature solo recording, from his debut solo album Curtis (1970), recorded at RCA Studios in Chicago and released as a single on Mayfield's own Curtom Records on June 25, 1971. The album version runs eight minutes and forty-nine seconds, carried by Henry Gibson's congas and a horn arrangement that became one of the most sampled passages in hip-hop — most famously through Just Blaze's production on Kanye West's “Touch the Sky.” The single failed to chart in the United States on release, but an edited version spent ten weeks in the United Kingdom's top fifty in 1971, peaking at number twelve. Rolling Stone placed the song at number 474 on its 2021 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and the recording holds a BPI platinum certification on the modern sales-and-streaming basis. Its lyric — an injunction to move toward a beautiful people and a better day — became one of the movement era's durable anthems.
