Toni Morrison (born Chloe Ardelia Wofford, February 18, 1931, Lorain, Ohio; died August 5, 2019, in the Bronx, New York, aged 88) was the novelist who rebuilt American literature's center of gravity. A Howard University graduate (BA 1953) with a Cornell master's (1955), she taught at Texas Southern and Howard before becoming the first Black woman fiction editor at Random House, where she spent nineteen years shaping other writers' books. Her own novels followed: The Bluest Eye (1970), Sula (1973), Song of Solomon (1977, National Book Critics Circle Award), and Beloved (1987), which won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1988 and was filmed in 1998. In 1993 she received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Black woman so honored. She delivered the Jefferson Lecture in 1996, joined Princeton's faculty as a professor, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on May 29, 2012.
