Southern University and A&M College is a public, historically Black land-grant university in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the flagship institution of the Southern University System. The university's own history describes it as founded in 1880 in New Orleans, the first public higher-education institution in Louisiana for Black people. Black political leaders including P. B. S. Pinchback had proposed such a school at the 1879 state constitutional convention, and the legislature chartered Southern University for Colored Students in 1880; it opened on March 7, 1881, with twelve students. Designated a land-grant college in 1890, it added an agricultural and mechanical department and took its present name. In 1914 it relocated to the Scott's Bluff site overlooking the Mississippi River in what is now Baton Rouge, with Joseph Samuel Clark as its first president there. The Baton Rouge campus covers 512 acres, its thirteen teams compete as the Jaguars in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and its marching band, the Human Jukebox, has represented the university since 1947. Southern attained Carnegie R2 doctoral-university status in 2021, the first HBCU in Louisiana so classified.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 3 — 747 Program, Wave 10; third Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): no Southern University (the Baton Rouge HBCU, Southern University and A&M College) entity in the live graph at 3,683 entities. The scripted screen's token-containment hits (University of Southern California CTL-E-1773; Southern Illinois University CTL-E-1739; USC Trojans football CTL-E-4477) are false positives on the shared token 'Southern,' hand-read and rejected; exact / normalized / alias match is CLEAR. ID CTL-E-6006 free. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Tier 4 — Scan Tail Wave 2 packet ordered reserve, position 1 of 25 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json ranked clean survivor #1008). The scan supplied the NAME STRING ONLY; no fact in this record is sourced to it (CTL-GOV-004). CONFLICT SHOWN, NOT BLENDED: the exact charter day in April 1880 is given as April 10 by Wikipedia's infobox, while a secondary HBCU directory summary consulted in this pass dated the establishment April 1, 1880 — the year 1880 is agreed by all sources read, and no single April day is asserted.
