Bill Pickett (1870–1932) was the African American cowboy who originated rodeo steer wrestling, known as bulldogging. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum records that he was born in 1870 in Travis County, Texas, and with four brothers ran the Pickett Brothers Bronco Busters and Rough Riders. His method for subduing a steer — seizing its horns, twisting its head upward and biting its nose or lower lip as bulldogs did with strays — became a rodeo exhibition act by the early 1900s, and in refined form steer wrestling remains a standard rodeo event. Pickett was a featured performer with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch and Wild West Show for more than a quarter century, billed as the Dusky Demon, and he also appeared in early Black-cast Western films. Excluded from some venues because he was Black, he sometimes performed under a claimed Native identity. He died in 1932 of injuries from a horse at the 101 Ranch. He was inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame, the museum's page dating the induction to 1972.
