Jerry Lorenzo Manuel Sr. (born December 23, 1953, in Hahira, Georgia) was a major-league second baseman who became one of the most respected managers of his generation, earning his reputation in Chicago. The National Baseball Hall of Fame, named here as a source, recounts that Manuel was a first-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers whose playing path was blocked by a famous double-play combination, and that he played for Detroit, Montreal, and San Diego across five major-league seasons. Baseball-Reference's Bullpen biography records that he then led the Chicago White Sox for six seasons, 1998–2003. The Hall of Fame describes the peak: after two second-place finishes, Manuel's 2000 White Sox won 95 games and the American League Central title behind a league-best 978 runs, and Manuel was a landslide winner of the American League Manager of the Year Award. He later managed the New York Mets from 2008 to 2010, and the Hall of Fame gives his combined managerial record as 704–684. His six South Side seasons make him a central figure in White Sox history.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0299. Firsts disposition: No first claimed. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Manuel's Chicago tenure is the record's center of gravity — six seasons, a division title, and a Manager of the Year award won in a landslide; 'the Sage' nickname, carried in his aliases, matches the reputation the Hall of Fame account describes.
