Merri Dee (born Mary Francine Dorham, October 30, 1936, Chicago; died March 16, 2022, Chicago) was a broadcaster and philanthropist who became one of Chicago television's defining presences. Raised largely in New Orleans, she returned to Chicago, graduated from Englewood Technical Prep Academy in 1955, and entered broadcasting at radio station WBEE in 1966, moving to television at WCIU and then to her own talk program on WSNS in 1971. That year she survived a kidnapping and shooting that killed her guest, and she made victims' advocacy a life's work, lobbying for Illinois's first victims' bill of rights. In 1972 she joined WGN-TV as a 9 p.m. news anchor, later serving for decades as the station's community relations director, hosting Bud Billiken Parade broadcasts and charity telethons, founding Athletes for a Better Education, and leading Illinois AARP in her later years.
