Timothy Thomas Fortune (1856–1928) was born enslaved in Marianna, Florida, and became the leading Black newspaper editor of his generation. His father Emanuel, a Reconstruction-era Florida legislator, secured him work as a legislative page, where he learned politics and the printer's trade; he later studied briefly at Howard University and worked in the print shop of the People's Advocate in Washington. Moving to New York around 1880, Fortune took over the Rumor and renamed it the New York Globe, then launched the Freeman, the paper that became the New York Age in 1887 — the Black weekly he edited, with interruptions, for two decades. His editorials attacked segregation, lynching, the convict lease system, and both political parties when they abandoned Black voters, and argued that Black Americans should defend themselves if attacked. In 1884 he published Black and White: Land, Labor, and Politics in the South, and he helped found the National Afro-American League, an early national civil rights organization whose model later fed the Niagara Movement and the NAACP. He ended his career editing Marcus Garvey's Negro World from 1923 until his death in Philadelphia in 1928, eulogized as the dean of Black journalists.
