Syl Johnson, born Sylvester Thompson in Mississippi on July 1, 1936, came to Chicago with his family around 1950 and grew up next door to blues guitarist Magic Sam, playing in the 1950s alongside Sam, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells, and Howlin' Wolf. He made his solo recording debut in 1959 and, after lean years, became the star of Chicago's Twinight Records. His 1967 Different Strokes and his 1969 Is It Because I'm Black, written in the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, defined his two legacies: the first became one of the most sampled recordings in hip-hop, borrowed by Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, De La Soul, and many others, while the second stands among the most direct civil-rights statements in soul music. In the 1970s he recorded for Hi Records in Memphis, including his 1975 version of Take Me to the River. Johnson pursued sampling royalties assertively and successfully, and archival reissues restored his catalog to view. He died on February 6, 2022, aged 85, weeks after his brother, bluesman Jimmy Johnson.
