Louis Allen, born 25 April 1919 in Amite County, Mississippi, was an African American logger and businessman in Liberty, Mississippi, and a World War II veteran. In September 1961 he witnessed the murder of his friend Herbert Lee, a farmer active with the NAACP and SNCC voter-registration work, who was shot at a Liberty cotton gin by Mississippi state representative E. H. Hurst. Pressured by local authorities, Allen gave testimony supporting Hurst's self-defense claim, and a coroner's jury cleared Hurst. Allen later told federal investigators and civil rights workers the truth and said he would testify if the government protected him; the Justice Department declined. Word of his cooperation spread, his logging business was boycotted, he received death threats, and Amite County Sheriff Daniel Jones harassed and jailed him repeatedly, once breaking his jaw. Allen stayed to care for his elderly mother, then planned to move to Milwaukee. On 31 January 1964, the night before he was to leave, he was shot and killed at the gate of his home. No one was ever prosecuted for his murder.
