Horace Julian Bond, born 14 January 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee, was a civil rights leader, Georgia legislator, professor and writer. The son of educator Horace Mann Bond, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, where in 1960 he helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and served as its communications director, leaving college to work full time in the movement before completing his degree in 1971. Elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965, he was denied his seat by legislators who objected to his opposition to the Vietnam War; the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Bond v. Floyd that his exclusion was unconstitutional, and he took his seat in 1967. He served twenty years in the Georgia House and Senate, co-founded the Southern Poverty Law Center in 1971 and served as its first president, and narrated the landmark PBS documentary series Eyes on the Prize. From 1998 to 2010 he chaired the NAACP, and he taught history at the University of Virginia from 1992 until retiring in 2012, teaching more than five thousand students. Bond died on 15 August 2015 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, aged 75.
