Michael W. Twitty is an African American Jewish writer, culinary historian, historical interpreter, and educator born in Washington, D.C., in 1977. He first became interested in traditional cooking as a child on a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, and he majored in African American studies and anthropology at Howard University without finishing because of financial constraints. In 2010 he launched Afroculinaria, a culinary history blog covering African and African American foodways, described by the Miami Book Fair as the first blog devoted to African American historic foodways and their legacies. His book The Cooking Gene, published by HarperCollins/Amistad, traces his African American ancestry through food from Africa to America and examines the origins of soul food, barbecue, and Southern cuisine. It won the 2018 James Beard Foundation Book Award for Book of the Year as well as the category for writing. The University of Washington Magazine identifies him as the first Black author to garner the James Beard Award for Writing. His later books include Koshersoul, published in 2022, exploring African and Jewish diaspora cuisines, and Recipes From the American South, published by Phaidon in 2025.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 4 — 747 Program, Wave 11; fourth Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): no Michael W. Twitty entity in the live graph at 3,763 entities (exact / normalized / alias match + token containment; CLEAR). ID CTL-E-6095 free. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Tier 4 — Scan Tail Wave 3 packet ordered reserve, position 10 of 35 (corpus-gap-candidates-2026-10-15.json ranked clean survivor #1559). The scan supplied the NAME STRING ONLY; no fact in this record is sourced to it (CTL-GOV-004). SCOPE GATE: PASS — Black America and diaspora canon — a Washington, D.C.-born culinary historian of African, African American, and Jewish foodways; Chicago relevance is through CTL foodways programming, not a Chicago birth or residence claim. Vital status: Living — verified. His cookbook Recipes From the American South was published by Phaidon in 2025, with NPR coverage dated October 15, 2025 adapted from the book (NPR via WAMC search result, published 2025-10-15), and no death report was found. STATISTICS — STATISTICS (sourced, dated): Born 1977 in Washington, D.C. (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-10-16); Afroculinaria launched 2010 (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-10-16); The Cooking Gene won two 2018 James Beard Foundation awards — Book of the Year and Writing (Wikipedia and UW Magazine, accessed 2026-10-16); Koshersoul published 2022 and Recipes From the American South published 2025 (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-10-16). CONFLICT SHOWN, NOT BLENDED: UW Magazine calls Twitty the first Black author to garner the James Beard Award for Writing, while his MasterClass biography in search results phrases the 2018 result as making him one of the first Black American authors in James Beard history to win both — the narrower UW claim is attributed in the description and the broader phrasing is not merged into it.
