Wayne F. Miller (1918–2013) was a Chicago-born American photographer whose documentary work after the Second World War produced one of the defining visual records of Black Chicago. The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds his work, lists him as born in 1918 and deceased in 2013, with South Side photographs dated 1946/48 among its holdings, including pool-hall and street scenes from that project. Miller called the series The Way of Life of the Northern Negro. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture holds a 1947 gelatin silver print from that series, depicting an unidentified couple in Chicago, and credits the image to Magnum Photos, with permission required for use. Published in book form as Chicago's South Side, 1946–1948 (2000), the photographs document the everyday life of a South Side community shaped by wartime migration from the South — its homes, churches, workplaces, and leisure — made by a photographer working inside the neighborhood over three postwar years. Miller's Chicago series is the basis of this record; his wider career in wartime and magazine photography is context, not the subject, and details beyond the opened institutional holdings are held for a fuller biographical pass.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 5 — 747 Program, Wave 12; fifth Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A CLEAR (hand-checked 2026-10-16): no Wayne Miller / Wayne F. Miller entity or alias in the live graph (3,843 entities). ID CTL-E-6167 free at staging. Supply: 747 Supply Ledger, Tier 4 scan-tail reserve banked by Scan Tail Wave 4, corpus-gap-candidates ranked #2078. The scan supplied the name string only; every fact is sourced under CTL-GOV-004. SCOPE GATE: SCOPE BASIS STATED PLAINLY FOR THE FOUNDER: Miller was a white photographer. He is staged NOT as a Black cultural figure in his own right but as the maker of a canonical documentary record OF Black Chicago — the 1946–1948 South Side series held by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian NMAAHC. Inclusion rests on that documentary record and its holdings, per the brief's framing call; the founder may rule otherwise at merge. Vital status: DECEASED — died 2013 (Art Institute of Chicago artist page: born 1918, died 2013; NMAAHC: American, 1918–2013; both accessed 2026-10-16). Exact day (reported May 22, 2013) NOT asserted — not verified from an opened source in this pass. STATISTICS — Holdings counted from opened pages, 2026-10-16: Art Institute of Chicago artist page lists Miller works including two dated 1946/48 from the Chicago project. NMAAHC object 2009.24.11 is a single gelatin silver print dated 1947 in the series The Way of Life of the Northern Negro (Smithsonian, accessed 2026-10-16). No career-wide output count is asserted — none was counted from an opened source. TIER: Provisional — Core identity, dates (1918–2013), and the Chicago series are verified from two institutional holdings (Art Institute of Chicago; Smithsonian NMAAHC), but the fuller career narrative in reference sources — Guggenheim fellowships 1946–1948, Magnum membership and presidency, The World Is Young (1958), and the exact death date of May 22, 2013 in Orinda, California — was read only in search-returned secondary pages and was NOT opened at page level in this pass, so those details are excluded from the description and must be verified from opened NYT/Washington Post/Magnum sources before promotion to Verified. MEDIA: photo HELD (HELD — candidate: Miller's Keeping Warm, Pool Hall, 1946/48 (Art Institute of Chicago holding) or the NMAAHC 1947 print from The Way of Life of the Northern Negro (object 2009.24.11, © Magnum Photos, permission required per Smithsonian page); NO license is claimed — PHOTO-001 verification deferred. — named candidate only; file-level rights verification per CTL-PHOTO-001 still required; no license claimed); chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6167-wayne-miller.svg); video HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short or verified-rights archival video staged); audio HELD (no rights-cleared matching-entity audio staged); map N/A (person record). MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person records carry no map slot; maps attach to places and institutions.) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record's sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (No matching-entity CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 rows, checked by nam) | audio = HELD (HELD: No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.)
