Willie Lee Morrow (October 9, 1939 – June 22, 2022) was a San Diego barber, businessman, and inventor who built a Black hair-care enterprise from a Market Street barbershop. Born in Alabama to sharecropper parents, he moved to San Diego and opened his first salon there in 1959, after training as a barber and stylist. Inspired in 1962, National Public Radio reports, by a wide-toothed wooden comb brought from Nigeria, he taught himself to manufacture the comb that became known as the Afro pick, selling, at one point, twelve thousand a week. In 1969 the Pentagon hired him to teach military barbers how to cut and style Black hair. He founded the California Curl Company, whose California Curl treatment was the forerunner of the Jheri curl, wrote manuals on cutting and styling Black hair, and later founded the San Diego Monitor newspaper and a Black radio station. A 2016 museum exhibition in Escondido displayed more than two hundred and fifty objects from his collection of hair-care tools. Morrow died at his home in San Diego on June 22, 2022, aged eighty-two, and his daughter Cheryl succeeded him in the family businesses.
