Warner Saunders (January 30, 1935 – October 9, 2018) was a Chicago television journalist whose four-decade career made him one of the defining anchors of Black Chicago broadcasting. A Chicago native, he held a bachelor's degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and a master's degree from Northeastern Illinois University, and he worked first as a public school teacher, youth worker, and Boys Club executive director before entering television. At WBBM-TV he served as director of community affairs and hosted the talk program Common Ground and the children's program known as The Good Gang Express. He then spent 29 years at NBC 5 (WMAQ-TV) as a sports and then news anchor, retiring in May 2009. His reporting included a 1990 series from South Africa on the release of Nelson Mandela, gathered into a documentary, and coverage spanning the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, Harold Washington's 1983 mayoral campaign, and the rise of Barack Obama. He was a past president of the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and a member of the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame. He died in Chicago on October 9, 2018, at age 83.

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (Scan Tail Wave 5 — 747 Program, Wave 12; fifth Scan Tail packet at the founder's 40-record size). Gate A (2026-10-16): Gate A: hand-checked entities.json (3,843 entities) — no Warner Saunders record exists; CLEAR. No WMAQ-TV or WBBM-TV entity exists in the graph. Education endpoints exist: Xavier University of Louisiana CTL-E-4173 and Northeastern Illinois University CTL-E-3448 (both School/university). Supply: Supply: 747 Supply Ledger Tier 4 scan-tail reserve (Scan Tail Wave 4 banked), scan #2186. SCOPE GATE: 747 Supply Ledger Tier 4 scan-tail reserve banked by Scan Tail Wave 4; corpus-gap-candidates rank #2186; Scan Tail Wave 5 Batch C assignment. NOTE: the brief's parenthetical dates (1941–2014) were overridden by the opened authoritative obituary record (1935–2018) under CTL-GOV-004. Vital status: Deceased — died Oct. 9, 2018, in Chicago, age 83 (NBC Chicago reporting as carried by Journal-isms and Wikipedia; Media Burn Archive tribute dated Oct. 30, 2018). Tribute language confined to curators_judgment. STATISTICS — CONFLICT WITH THE STAGING BRIEF, SHOWN NOT BLENDED: the brief supplied '1941–2014'; no opened source supports those dates. Opened sources agree: born Jan. 30, 1935 and died Oct. 9, 2018, at age 83 (Wikipedia, citing NBC Chicago's Oct. 10, 2018 report; Media Burn Archive dates the tribute 1935–2018; Journal-isms reports WMAQ's account of his death at 83). The record therefore carries 1935–2018. SECOND CONFLICT, SHOWN: Emmy count — WMAQ as quoted by Journal-isms and the AP-sourced summary give 20 Emmy Awards; Media Burn Archive says 'more than 20 Emmys.' Both forms are recorded here; the description avoids a precise Emmy total. Other dated figures: 29 years at NBC 5 and retirement in May 2009 (all three opened sources agree); Xavier basketball note (32 points vs. Dillard, Jan. 11, 1956) appears only in the Wikipedia summary and is not carried as a headline statistic. MEDIA: photo HELD (HELD — candidate: the WMAQ-TV video still of Saunders interviewing Nelson Mandela, credited to WMAQ-TV and reproduced on the Journal-isms obituary page. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Person record; map specification applies to place records only, per brief (Persons N/A).) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record's sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (Checked against the CTL Shorts Link Map (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 entries) by entity name and titl) | audio = HELD (No CTL audio asset staged.
