Georges Collinet, born in Cameroon to a Cameroonian mother and a French father, is a broadcaster whose French- and English-language programs have linked Africa, Europe, and the United States for six decades. Taken to France for schooling at seven and a half in 1947, he came to the United States at twenty and joined the Voice of America, where his morning program Bonjour l'Afrique made him one of the best-known broadcasters on the African continent. In a 2012 NPR interview he recalled playing James Brown and Wilson Pickett for African listeners despite objections from American embassies, and urging African musicians not to abandon their own traditions and instruments. Working with African musicians in Paris in the 1970s and early 1980s, he supported their efforts to retain African roots while developing a distinctive, professional sound. Since 1988 he has hosted Afropop and Afropop Worldwide, the award-winning public-radio series heard across the United States, Europe, and Africa, and he has also hosted television connecting public-policy and cultural figures across the continent. Afropop Worldwide's own program celebrating him describes a thirty-eight-year hosting career and presents him, in the present tense, as a living legend of African music broadcasting.
