Black Mitzvah is the 2019 Netflix stand-up comedy special by Tiffany Haddish, released on December 3, 2019 — her fortieth birthday, and the day she herself became a bat mitzvah. The Jewish Women's Archive records that the special turns on Haddish discovering her Jewish identity at twenty-seven, after reconnecting with her estranged father, an Eritrean Jew, and learning of the persecution he faced; on the day of release she read from the Torah in a ceremony led by Rabbi Susan Silverman. The Milken Institute's speaker biography likewise identifies the work as her 2019 Netflix comedy special, in which she reflects on her life, her fame, and the heritage she had only come to know as an adult. The recording of the special went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021, as the Recording Academy's own artist record confirms. The Milken biography adds the historical weight of that win: Haddish became the second Black woman ever to win the category, and the first since Whoopi Goldberg won in 1986. The work is filed here as a comedy special — a filmed stand-up performance that also circulates, and won its Grammy, as an album.
