Tiffany Haddish, born 3 December 1979 in South Central Los Angeles, is an American stand-up comedian and actress. Her father, Tsihaye Reda Haddish, was a refugee from Eritrea; her mother, Leola, was an African American business owner. After her mother suffered severe brain damage in a car accident, Haddish entered foster care at twelve and found her footing at a Laugh Factory comedy camp. Years of small roles and stand-up led to a star-making turn as Dina in Girls Trip (2017), named among the century's best film performances by The New Yorker. That year she became the first Black woman stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live, winning a Primetime Emmy for the episode, and published the best-selling memoir The Last Black Unicorn. Her album Black Mitzvah (2019) won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2021. In 2019 she became a naturalized Eritrean citizen while burying her father in his homeland, and she has publicly honored her Eritrean heritage throughout her career.
