Gene Demby is an American journalist who serves as co-host and correspondent for Code Switch, NPR's team covering race, ethnicity, and culture. Before coming to NPR, he served as managing editor for HuffPost's BlackVoices vertical following its launch, and later covered politics there. Prior to that role he spent six years in various positions at The New York Times. While working for the Times in 2007, he started PostBourgie, a blog about race, culture, politics, and media, which won the 2009 Black Weblog Award for Best News/Politics Site. Demby is a founding member of the Code Switch team, the NPR project built around fearless conversations about race — how race shapes politics, pop culture, history, food, and everyday life. In 2020 Code Switch was named Apple Podcasts' first-ever Show of the Year. As of NPR's September 2022 announcement, Demby co-hosted the program alongside B.A. Parker, with senior correspondent Karen Grigsby Bates, and journalist Lori Lizarraga announced as a further co-host joining Demby and Parker. NPR Illinois' current people page continues to list Demby as the team's co-host and correspondent, with recent Code Switch episodes carrying his hosting credit.
