Scott La Rock (March 2, 1962 – August 27, 1987), born Scott Monroe Sterling in the Bronx, New York, was an American DJ and producer and a founding member of Boogie Down Productions. Raised by his mother, Carolyn Morant, he moved between Queens and the South Bronx before settling in Morris Heights. A standout student and athlete at Our Savior Lutheran High School, he DJed at Dugan's Bar while in college in Vermont. After graduating in 1984, he returned to New York, spinning records at the Broadway Repertoire Theatre while working as a social worker at the Franklin Men's Shelter. There he met Kris Parker, known as KRS-One; along with Derrick “D-Nice” Jones, they formed Boogie Down Productions. In 1987 the group released their landmark debut album, Criminal Minded, now regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time — ranked by The Source among the “100 Best Rap Albums” and by Rolling Stone in its “500 Greatest Albums” list. La Rock's life was cut short months after the album's release: attempting to help D-Nice resolve a dispute, he was shot at the Highbridge Gardens projects in the Bronx and died at Lincoln Hospital within an hour. His death directly inspired KRS-One's Stop the Violence Movement.
