Bethune-Cookman University is a historically Black university in Daytona Beach, Florida, founded by educator Mary McLeod Bethune. On October 3, 1904, Bethune opened a training school for Negro girls with $1.50, faith, five little girls, and her son Albert, in the account given on the university's own history page. The school grew through several stages during Bethune's lifetime. In 1923 it merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, founded in 1872 and described by the university as the first institution of higher education for Black people in Florida; the merger was finalized in 1925 as the Daytona-Cookman Collegiate Institute and brought a Methodist affiliation. On April 27, 1931, the name was officially changed to Bethune-Cookman College. The university states that it achieved university status in 2007, after adding a graduate program in transformational leadership. It describes itself today in terms of its HBCU sensibility, small-university community, and Bethune's legacy of service, and it reports more than 19,000 graduates since 1943. Its best-known predecessor alumnus is labor and civil-rights leader A. Philip Randolph, valedictorian of Cookman Institute's 1907 class.

Notes

Staged 2026-10-16 under CTL-GOV-006 (The Closer — 747 Program, Wave 13 final packet; a gap-closing packet built from the earlier packets' documented blocked edges). Gate A (2026-10-16): CLEAR — hand-checked against the live graph (3,910 entities): no Bethune-Cookman University homed under the current name or any of the three historical name forms; Mary McLeod Bethune (CTL-E-5960) exists without the school endpoint. ID CTL-E-6291 free at staging. Project IDs follow the graph's HBCU university peers (Southern University CTL-E-6006; Grambling CTL-E-6007). Supply: 747 blocked-edge harvest — Scan Tail Wave 2 documented the Bethune founded_by edge as blocked; two earlier packets called this school an obvious future mint. SCOPE GATE: Black institutional anchor with a documented blocked edge in a merged packet; staged to close that edge, per the Closer brief. Vital status: ACTIVE — the university's live official site (cookman.edu) was accessed 2026-10-16 presenting current programs and its Daytona Beach address in the present tense. STATISTICS (counted, sourced, dated 2026-10-16): Founded October 3, 1904 — Bethune opened the school with $1.50, five little girls, and her son Albert (university official history, opened in full; Britannica corroborates an October 1904 Daytona Beach opening). Cookman Institute founded 1872, described by the university as the first institution of higher education for Black people in Florida. Merger begun 1923, finalized 1925, producing the Daytona-Cookman Collegiate Institute with a Methodist affiliation (university; Britannica). CONFLICT — renaming to Bethune-Cookman College: April 27, 1931 per the university (followed as the controlling institutional source) vs. 1929 (Britannica; National Women's History Museum) vs. 1924 (Encyclopedia.com); all forms recorded, none blended. CONFLICT — original school name: "Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls" (university) vs. "Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls" (BlackPast; Orange County Regional History Center) vs. "Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls" (Britannica); all three forms are carried in Aliases and no single form is asserted as exclusive. University status 2007 (university). More than 19,000 graduates since 1943 (university, as stated). Enrollment deliberately NOT stated: no opened official dated figure was obtained; a non-official figure of approximately 2,800 (Florida Humanities) is excluded by rule and the decision is recorded here. Address: 640 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL 32114 (university). Method disclosure: Sources 1, 2 and 4 were opened in full (Source 4 by the packet assembler, upgrading the research packet's search-result read); Sources 3 and 5 were read in search results after a browser rate limit (429) in the research session, disclosed rather than concealed. MEDIA: map HELD (address-based spec from the university's official page); photo HELD with named candidate; chart FILLED (charts/chart-ctl-e-6291-bethune-cookman.svg); video HELD (no matching-entity CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map); audio HELD. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = HELD (Address-based map spec held for production: Bethune-Cookman University, 640 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard,) | visual_assets = HELD: | chart = FILLED (CTL-created chart (black / deep red / gold) built only from this record's sourced statistics and timeline fact) | video = HELD (No matching-entity CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 rows, checked by nam) | audio = HELD (HELD: No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging.)
