Combined Graph record U-07546 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6360.

Simone Browne is an Associate Professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her MA and PhD (2007) in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Her book Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness (Duke University Press, 2015) established her as a central voice in surveillance studies. Browne teaches and researches surveillance studies, popular culture, digital media, and Black diaspora studies. Her key concept, 'racializing surveillance,' names surveillance that orders and reifies boundaries, borders, and bodies along racial lines — a framing that connects contemporary monitoring technologies to the historical surveillance of Black life under slavery and its afterlives, and that has shaped how scholars across Black studies and media studies analyze biometric and algorithmic systems of watching.

Notes

STAGING: temp id EB-16. University of Texas at Austin and University of Toronto have no live records in the build graph — affiliation edges are target-absent (see blocked edges). Title follows UT/Yale (Associate Professor) over Wikipedia's looser wording. CURATOR'S JUDGMENT (DRAFT): Browne supplies the packet's surveillance line — the watched body as the oldest dataset in the Americas.
