Combined Graph record U-07571 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6385.

The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is the United States' national digital aggregator for cultural heritage. Launched on April 18, 2013, it went live with over 2.4 million digital books, manuscripts, photographs, maps and other resources. DPLA does not build its collection institution by institution directly; it works through a hubs model. Service Hubs are state or regional collaborations that aggregate metadata from libraries, museums, archives and other cultural-heritage institutions in their area, while Content Hubs are individual institutions with very large digital collections. Through dp.la and its API, that collaboration makes millions of records publicly searchable in one place. As accessed on 2026-10-29, DPLA's hubs page states its aggregation provides access to more than 47 million items from more than 5,000 libraries, archives and museums nationwide.

The record

Notes

FIGURE DISCIPLINE: the 47-million/5,000 figure is access-dated (2026-10-29) only — DPLA's hubs page carries no publication date — and the description states it with that qualifier. GRADE BASIS: Verified — DPLA's own hubs page plus the NEH's independent launch release. BLOCKED EDGE: planned/launched-at → EB-38 (Berkman Klein Center) — documented in DPLA's own retrospective, but the schema has no Institution→Institution origin predicate; listed as blocked in the packet memo. PHOTO: HELD (see media). CURATOR'S JUDGMENT (DRAFT): DPLA is the scale proof for CTL's preservation lane — a hubs model CTL's own archive federation work can learn from, and a standing citation for what aggregation makes findable. (Draft judgment, not fact.)
