Hildrus Augustus Poindexter (1901–1987) was a bacteriologist and tropical-disease epidemiologist — the first African American to earn both an MD (Harvard, 1929) and a PhD (Columbia, 1932). He chaired bacteriology and public health at Howard, won a Bronze Star as an Army malaria expert in the Pacific in World War II, and directed the US Public Health Service Mission to Liberia. In 1962 he became the first Black scientist board-certified in microbiology.
