PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Shaun D. Ferguson Sr. was superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department from 2019 to 2022. A New Orleans native and twenty-four-year NOPD veteran, Ferguson came up through the department's ranks and was commanding its Education and Training Division when Mayor LaToya Cantrell selected him to succeed Michael Harrison. He was sworn in on January 18, 2019. Ferguson's tenure stacked crises: the Hard Rock Hotel collapse, the COVID-19 pandemic, repeated hurricanes, a federal consent decree, a hemorrhage of officers, and a violent-crime surge so severe that in September 2022 New Orleans passed St. Louis as the nation's per-capita murder capital. By December 2022 the council's vice president, J. P. Morrell, was publicly calling for Ferguson's resignation. On December 6, 2022, Ferguson announced he would retire at the end of the year, denying that he had been pushed out — 'It's time to go home,' he said — and ending his service on December 31, 2022. Interim chief Michelle Woodfork, niece of Warren Woodfork, the NOPD's first Black superintendent, succeeded him on an acting basis.
