Combined Graph record U-07682 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6810.

Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton is a foundational figure in basketball history whose significance rests on a precise, documented first: in 1950 he became the first Black player to sign an NBA contract, joining the New York Knicks after the Globetrotters sold his contract to the Knickerbockers. The distinction matters — Chuck Cooper was the first Black player drafted and Earl Lloyd the first to play in an NBA game — and Clifton's signing is the contractual act that opened the league's door. Raised in Chicago after his family moved from Arkansas, he starred at DuSable High School, played at Xavier University of Louisiana, served in the U.S. Army, and starred for the New York Rens and Harlem Globetrotters before his Knicks tenure (1950–1957), a 1957 All-Star selection, a final season in Detroit, and posthumous Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame induction in 2014.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0345. FIRSTS DISPOSITION: ASSERTED — two independent sources in this pass (Andscape/ESPN and SLAM) support the exact claim 'first Black player to sign an NBA contract (1950, New York Knicks)'; the record keeps the claim precise and distinct from Cooper (first drafted) and Lloyd (first to play). Born in Arkansas and raised in Chicago, so no Chicago birthplace ('from') relationship is emitted. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Clifton is a cornerstone Chicago basketball pioneer — a DuSable product whose 1950 signing is one of the most consequential contractual moments in American sports; CTL should present the three 1950 firsts together so the public record stays exact. Photo correction (head, at assembly): the lane's staged Commons file did not resolve under its stated title/license; the head substituted a verified subject file — see media layer.
