PROVISIONAL evidence grade of this record

Larry Levan (1954-1992) was a New York DJ and producer who learned the craft alongside Frankie Knuckles at the Continental Baths and became resident DJ at Paradise Garage, the defining Black and Latino gay dance club of its era. His long, dramatic, sound-system-centered sets are the closest comparison case for Knuckles's Warehouse practice. In the Warehouse story he appears as Robert Williams's reported first choice for the Chicago residency, an invitation Levan is said to have declined in favor of the Garage opening, and as the other half of the apprenticeship that formed Knuckles's approach to reading and moving a dancefloor over an entire night.
