Combined Graph record U-07686 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6814.

Ferguson Arthur "Fergie" Jenkins (born December 13, 1942, in Chatham, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian right-handed pitcher whose pinpoint control made him the ace of the Chicago Cubs in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The National Baseball Hall of Fame, named here as a source, records that Jenkins originally signed with Philadelphia in 1962, was traded to the Cubs on April 21, 1966, and was converted by Chicago from the bullpen into a starting pitcher, winning 20 games in 1967 — the first of six straight 20-win seasons with the Cubs. As career statistics attributed to the Hall of Fame and accessed 2026-11-03, Jenkins finished a 19-year career at 284–226 with a 3.34 earned-run average and 3,192 strikeouts against only 997 walks, won the 1971 National League Cy Young Award, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame corroborates his Chatham birth, his Cubs years, and his 1991 Cooperstown enshrinement. His career connects Chicago baseball to Black Canada and to Chatham's Underground Railroad-descended community.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0277 (cross-ref restored at head assembly from s1-selection.json; the build lane's assignment excerpt had omitted the number). Firsts disposition: no roster 'first' is asserted on this record; descriptions of Jenkins as an early/first Canadian Hall of Famer appear in secondary sources but are not carried here as a CTL first claim. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Jenkins is Chicago's bridge to Black Canada — a Chatham-born ace whose control, not spectacle, anchored the Cubs' best late-1960s teams. Photo: HELD at build-lane stage (the lane's Commons route timed out); CLEARED by the head at assembly via the Commons API — see media layer.
