Combined Graph record U-07706 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-6834.

Cappie Pondexter is a guard whose game was formed in Chicago even though she was born on the West Coast. Born January 7, 1983 in Oceanside, California, and raised in Chicago, she starred at John Marshall Metropolitan High School, where she was twice named Illinois Miss Basketball, and at Rutgers University, leading the Scarlet Knights to back-to-back Big East regular-season championships in 2005 and 2006. Selected second overall by Phoenix in the 2006 WNBA Draft, she won championships with the Mercury in 2007 and 2009 and the 2007 Finals MVP award, per WNBA reporting, and won Olympic gold in 2008. In 2015 she came home in a trade to the Chicago Sky, playing for her hometown team through 2017. The WNBA's 2018 Sparks signing release described her as the league's fourth all-time leading scorer at that time and a seven-time All-Star.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0362. Born in Oceanside, California — no Chicago 'from' (birthplace) relationship is emitted; her Chicago tie is upbringing and schooling, stated in the description. Chicago Sky is not a homed endpoint in this pass, so no played_for relationship is emitted. One low-quality source in this pass wrongly credited her with a Chicago Sky championship; this record asserts only her verified Phoenix titles (2007, 2009). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Pondexter's 2015 homecoming is a signature Chicago Sky moment — a Marshall High School great returning to lead the hometown franchise — and a key bridge between Chicago prep history and the WNBA era. Photo correction (head, at assembly): staged Commons file did not resolve; verified subject file substituted — see media layer.
