Montell 'Ice' Griffin was a Chicago-born light heavyweight boxer who won a world title in one of the most unusual fights of the 1990s. Born June 6, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois, Griffin won the 1992 United States amateur light heavyweight title and represented the United States at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where Olympedia records that he lost in the quarter-finals. He turned professional in 1993 and rose to prominence by defeating James Toney twice by decision, in 1995 and 1996. Those wins earned him a March 1997 bout against WBC light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr.; Griffin won the title when Jones was disqualified in the ninth round, handing Jones his first professional defeat, but lost the title in the first round of their immediate rematch. Griffin remained a leading contender for the rest of a professional career that ran to 2011, and Olympedia summarizes his final record as 50 wins (30 by knockout), 8 losses and 1 draw.

The record

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0514. Grade is Provisional under GOV-004 as applied in this pass: two independent sources (Wikipedia and Olympedia) verified, but no BoxRec record — the named authoritative boxing source — was retrieved in this pass; upgrade on BoxRec capture. Boxing has no team endpoints; the only relationship emitted is his sourced Chicago birthplace. Note: Olympedia's summary dates the first Jones bout to 1996, while the title chronology in the Wikipedia record places Griffin's WBC title in 1997; the description follows the 1997 title year and flags the discrepancy here. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Griffin is a Chicago-born Olympian and world champion whose two wins over James Toney and disqualification win over Roy Jones Jr. make him one of the most accomplished Chicago light heavyweights of his generation.
