Elston Gene Howard (February 23, 1929 – December 14, 1980) was the first Black player for the New York Yankees and a champion catcher whose career began with the Kansas City Monarchs. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), named here as a source, recounts that Howard's professional debut came in 1948 with the Monarchs at nineteen, that the Yankees signed him, and that after losing the 1951 and 1952 seasons to Army service he produced an MVP season in the International League in 1954 before integrating the Yankees in 1955 — his debut game, the subject of SABR's account, was played on April 14, 1955. Baseball-Reference's Bullpen biography states the first directly: Howard was the first Black player to play for the Yankees. The Bullpen further records that, blocked at catcher by Yogi Berra, Howard played primarily in the outfield in his early Yankees seasons, won four World Series with New York (1956, 1958, 1961, and 1962), and was the American League MVP in 1963, a year in which he hit a career-high 28 home runs. Wikipedia adds that he was the first Black player in American League history to win the MVP honor, that his number 32 was retired by the Yankees, and that he coached for the club from 1969 to 1979. His route from the Monarchs to the Bronx is one of integration's defining journeys.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0300. Firsts disposition: 'First Black player for the New York Yankees' ASSERTED — supported by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and Baseball-Reference Bullpen. Accuracy flag: Howard is NOT in the National Baseball Hall of Fame — a secondary Q&A source surfaced in research falsely claimed a 1984 induction (1984 is when the Yankees retired his number 32 and dedicated his Monument Park plaque); no Hall of Fame membership is asserted anywhere in this record. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Howard waited out the Yankees' delay, Berra's prime, and two lost Army years, then became an MVP — and his road ran from the Monarchs, which is why this graph can hold both ends of it.
