Combined Graph record U-07036 · provenance: build store (JSON graph), record CTL-E-5773.

The Kansas City Monarchs were the longest-running and most successful franchise in Negro league baseball, founded in 1920 by owner J. L. Wilkinson, who built the roster from his multiracial All Nations barnstorming club and the Army's 25th Infantry Wreckers. A charter member of the Negro National League in 1920, the club won that league's pennant race repeatedly and took the first Colored World Series in 1924. Wilkinson's portable lighting system made the Monarchs pioneers of night baseball during the Depression. When the Negro American League formed in 1937, the Monarchs became its dominant club, winning five of its first six pennants and eight league titles in all, and the 1942 Negro World Series. The roster line runs through Satchel Paige, Bullet Rogan, Hilton Smith, and Buck O'Neil; in 1945 Wilkinson signed Jackie Robinson, who played one season in Kansas City before Brooklyn. Wilkinson sold the club after 1948; it later moved its base to Grand Rapids, Michigan, while keeping the Monarchs name, and finally disbanded in 1965. Thirteen Monarchs players are in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and Wilkinson joined them in 2006.

Notes

STAGED 2026-10-16 (747 Program, Named Remainders & Further Gaps, Batch A) — not merged; awaits founder merge go. Gate A: PASS — no graph record under the name (the club is named inside the CTL-E-5517 league description but held no record of its own). Peer model: Negro American League (CTL-E-5517) and team peers (CTL-E-5503), Organization/other, BCI-001. Count handling: SABR counts thirteen Monarchs PLAYERS in the Hall of Fame and lists Wilkinson separately (inducted 2006 as an executive/pioneer); the description follows SABR's framing and does not blend the two counts. Edges staged: member_of to CTL-E-5517 (Negro American League) and to CTL-E-5245 (Negro National League) — member_of (Organization→Organization) is the matrix-legal wiring for league membership. Map: N/A (team record). Photo: HELD. MEDIA LAYER (staged 2026-10-16; full per-asset PHOTO-001 records + embed specs in the packet's staged JSON, Drive packet folder): map = N/A (Organization/team records carry no map slot under the media-layer rule; maps attach to places and institutions) | visual_assets = HELD: No file-page-level PHOTO-001 license verification completed at staging; the best-known Monarchs photography is | chart = FILLED (CTL-created timeline built only from this record's sourced facts.) | video = HELD (No CTL Short in the Shorts Link Map catalog (shorts-link-map-2026-10-15.json, 233 entries, searched by name st) | audio = HELD (No CTL-owned or rights-cleared matching-entity audio exists at staging; slot held with reason.)
