John Robert Thompson Jr. (September 2, 1941 – August 30, 2020), the Georgetown University coach known as "Big John," was born in Washington, D.C., starred at Providence College, and — backing up Bill Russell — won two NBA championships as a Boston Celtics player in 1965 and 1966. Hired by Georgetown in 1972 as the university's first Black head basketball coach, he built a 3–23 team into a national power over 27 seasons (596–239), reaching the NCAA championship game in 1982, 1984, and 1985. In 1984 his Hoyas beat Houston to win the title, making him the first Black head coach to win the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship — the claim supported here by Georgetown University and BlackPast. Georgetown records three championship-game appearances, seven Big East tournament titles, and 24 consecutive postseason berths under Thompson, who coached four future Hall of Famers — Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, and Allen Iverson — and entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame himself in 1999.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0365. Firsts disposition: 'First Black head coach to win the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship' ASSERTED — supported by Georgetown University and BlackPast. Identity precision: this is John Robert Thompson Jr. of Georgetown (1941–2020), not any namesake. Also documented: two NBA titles as a Celtics player (1965, 1966). Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Thompson's 1984 title is the coaching counterpart to the players' firsts in this batch — proof, in the sport's most visible chair, that the exclusion had never been about ability. His own objection to the framing is part of the history and belongs in the encyclopedia entry.
