Cobi N'Gai Jones (born June 16, 1970) is an American former soccer midfielder who walked on at UCLA, helped the Bruins win the 1990 NCAA championship, and became the defining player of the LA Galaxy's first era. Allocated to Los Angeles for Major League Soccer's inaugural 1996 season, he played all 12 of his MLS seasons for the Galaxy — 306 regular-season games, 70 goals, and 91 assists — captained the club to its first MLS Cup title in 2002, and won a second in 2005. For the United States he earned 164 caps between 1992 and 2004, the all-time record for the U.S. men's national team, played at the 1994, 1998, and 2002 World Cups, and was named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year in 1998. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Galaxy retired his No. 13.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0177. Firsts disposition: NO 'first' is asserted in the description. The Galaxy's 'only player to play each of the first 12 MLS seasons with the same team' and 'first goal in club history' rest on the club source alone in this record and are recorded here rather than asserted; the 164-cap U.S. men's record is stated as a record (not a 'first') on three sources. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Jones was American soccer's bridge figure — a walk-on who became the face of a new league without ever changing clubs. The retired No. 13 and the caps record measure loyalty and durability in a sport that rarely rewards either. Photo: CLEARED — CobiJones.jpg, CC BY-SA 3.0.
