Ray Barbee (born October 5, 1971, in San Jose, California) is an American skateboarder and musician who helped invent modern street skateboarding in the late 1980s. One of the first skaters to carry freestyle and flatland technique into the street — technical ollie combinations and the no-comply variations he is best known for — he turned professional with Powell Peralta's Bones Brigade in 1989 and had celebrated video parts in the company's Public Domain (1988), Ban This (1989), and Propaganda videos. In 1991 he left Powell Peralta for The Firm, Lance Mountain's company. Alongside Ron Allen and Steve Steadham he was among the first famous African-American skaters. A multi-instrumentalist, he released his debut EP, Triumphant Procession, a collection of jazz-influenced instrumentals, on Galaxia Records in 2003.

Notes

Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0239. Firsts disposition: NO discrete 'first' is asserted. The characterization 'among the first famous African-American skaters' is All About Jazz's, stated in the description with its companions (Ron Allen, Steve Steadham) as that source frames it; the technique claim — among the first to bring freestyle/flatland tricks to street skating — is supported by both All About Jazz and Wikipedia. No federation or Hall source covers Barbee; grading rests on two independent specialist accounts plus brand project documentation. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Barbee's influence is measured in other skaters' feet — the no-comply vocabulary he normalized is now basic literacy — and his second career in jazz instrumentals follows the same logic of touch over force.
