Louis Santop Loftin was an American catcher in Black baseball's early decades, called by the Baseball Hall of Fame "the first of the great Negro League sluggers" and "the first Negro League superstar." His vital data are genuinely unsettled, and this record shows the splits: he was born on January 17 in Texas — 1889 in the Hall of Fame's listing and in SABR's modern biography, which rests on census, Navy, and draft records, against 1890 in John Holway's 1979 SABR account — and his birthplace is given as Fort Worth by the Hall and SABR's biography, against Tyler in the older listings. A left-handed power hitter of exceptional size for his era, known as "Big Bertha" and "Top," Santop starred from 1909 for the Philadelphia Giants, the New York Lincoln Giants, and the Hilldale club, served in the U.S. Navy in World War I, and died in Philadelphia on January 22, 1942. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2006.

Notes
Sports Encyclopedia roster CTL-SPE-0264. Firsts disposition: the Hall of Fame's characterizations — 'first of the great Negro League sluggers' and 'first Negro League superstar' — are ASSERTED only as attributed descriptions of the Hall, as worded in the description; no independent 'first' claim is made. VITAL-DATA SPLITS SHOWN, NOT BLENDED: birth year 1889 (Hall, SABR Kern, census/Navy records) vs. 1890 (Holway 1979 and older listings); birthplace Fort Worth (Hall, SABR Kern) vs. Tyler (older listings); the older Holway account also gave a January 6, 1942 death date against January 22, 1942 in the database listings used here. Era follows 1889. Curator's Judgment (DRAFT): Santop is Black baseball's first drawing card — a dead-ball-era catcher who hit tape-measure home runs and drew the crowds the early leagues were built on. The uncertainty in his own file, down to the town and year of his birth, is the archive of a sport recorded by others.
